種下ろし ~奄美大島の伝統行事~

Miru Amamiのある奄美大島北部に位置する龍郷町では、多くの集落で「種下ろし」行事を行います。
一年の収穫を祝うことの他に、結婚や新築、新しいお店のオープンなど、お祝い事をする意味も兼ね、集落や集落民のさらなる繁栄を独自の歌や踊りを通して願います。

このお祭りは、島が長寿である理由を紐解くヒントにつながる機会であり、人と人が助け合うことを学ぶ様々なヒントに満ち溢れています。
老若男女が集い同じ場を共有することには、集団での交流を通し、励まし合うだけでなく、お互いの安否を確認する意味や、新しい世代に学びを伝える場としての意味もあります。振り付けには、より良い収穫になるように、と地を慣らし肥やすような動作のものや、花びらや波とも思えるような手の振り付けには、波のような自然な流れに乗せ、悪払いをし、良きものを招き入れるという意味があるなど、生きる知恵を、踊りや歌という一体になれる方法で一つの文化を紡ぎ続けています。

掛け合いは島口で行われますが、多くの歌詞には島での暮らし、色恋をうたい、古くから文字を読むことができなかった島の人々にとって、唄に知恵をのせ、交流することは、繁栄をするために大変必要な特別な意味を持ちました。ジャズのように即興性が高く、曲の長さやスピードなどに定めがありません。また歌詞は節のような一句をいくつもつなげて行くことができるので、その時に居合わせる人々や盛り上がりなどに応じて様々に変化をする唯一無二の奏となります。

種下ろし行事は、無料のイベントですが、会場で振る舞われるお食事やお飲み物など、全ては集落民による寄付により成り立っております。
集まった寄付を、全ての集落民に周知します。これには、花金として集まった寄付を、今後の集落活動の維持に必要な活動や備品の購入に利用されるため、花のお披露（寄付の周知）はとても大切な儀式の一つとして盛り上がりを見せます。
また、この「花のお披露」は踊りが素晴らしい時や、集落を盛り上げようとする行為が見られたときには、投げ銭のようにして追加することができるため、大いに盛り上がります。

Amidst the picturesque landscapes of northern Amami Oshima, in the heart of Tatsugo town, a heartwarming event takes place every autumn known as “Taneoroshi.” This festival isn’t just a celebration of the year’s harvest; it’s a unique occasion where the community rejoices in weddings, new homes, and the opening of fresh local businesses. It’s a time when the villagers come together, hoping for the continued prosperity of their community through distinct songs and dances.

But Taneoroshi holds a deeper significance that offers a glimpse into the island’s longevity and serves as a treasure chest of lessons in cooperation. People of all ages, from the young to the elderly, gather in unity, not only to uplift each other but also to ensure each other’s well-being. It’s a place where wisdom is shared across generations. The dance movements represent actions like nurturing the land for better harvests, with hand gestures symbolising blooming flowers, rhythmic motions reminiscent of waves, and the act of flipping their palms, signifying the ushering in of the good and the banishing of the bad. This dance mirrors the natural flow of life, weaving a unique culture through the unison of dance and song.

The interaction is in the local dialect, yet the lyrics often reflect island life, stories of love, and offer wisdom through song. For the island’s residents, who historically couldn’t read, these songs carried a special meaning, promoting communal bonding for the sake of prosperity. Much like jazz, these songs are highly improvisational, with no set length or tempo. The lyrics can be pieced together in various ways, making each performance unique, adapting to the moment and the energy of the participants.

While the Taneoroshi event is a free occasion, all the food and drinks served at the venue are made possible through donations by the local villagers. The collected donations are shared among all the villagers and are vital for sustaining future community activities and purchasing necessary equipment. The “Hananoohirome” is a cherished ceremony where donations are publicly acknowledged and celebrated, symbolising the unity of the community. In moments of outstanding dances or initiatives to uplift the village, additional donations can be offered, creating a spirited atmosphere.
