About the Vessel: “Zan”
The name “Zan” means dugong in the language of the Ryukyu Amami region. The last confirmed sighting of a dugong in northern Amami was 40 years ago, and since then, they have vanished from Amami’s waters.
We chose the name “Zan” to echo the dugong’s status as an endangered, “phantom” species and to reflect the rarity of our vessel, one of only two 29ft Fin Sailors in Japan. We hope to inspire a future where dugongs can once again thrive in Amami’s seas.
