Autumn on the Island: Where Culture and Warmth Endure

As the skies clear and the winds soften, autumn in Amami brings more than just a change in season. Across the island, villages host gatherings where songs, dances, and centuries-old traditions are passed gently from one generation to the next.

In this blog, we introduce some of the cultural highlights you may encounter from September to October—focusing on “Taneoroshi” (Seed Festival), a local celebration hosted at Miru Amami together with the community.

Taneoroshi at Miru Amami

Scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2025

At Miru Amami, we join hands with local residents to hold Taneoroshi, a ceremony rooted in the Edo period. Centered around the island’s traditional “Hachigatsu Odori” dances, this ritual is performed to pray for abundant harvests and family wellbeing.

The sound of shamisen and the beat of chijin drums set the rhythm, as songs and dances once born in these villages come alive again. Guests staying with us are warmly invited to join the circle alongside the community, sharing in a rare and intimate moment.

The gestures of the dance—palms turning like waves, or beckoning motions said to ward off misfortune and invite good fortune—reflect the island’s way of living with nature and honoring unseen connections.

Guest Participation

All Miru Amami guests are welcome to join. Light local refreshments will be served during the gathering.

Donations

For those who wish, donation envelopes will be available at the front desk. Contributions support the preservation of these village traditions, children’s education programs, and the upkeep of communal halls. Joining in is not only a cultural experience—it is a way to help carry Amami’s heritage forward.

Another Face of Amami’s Autumn

September to October corresponds to the seventh through ninth months of the lunar calendar, when communities across Amami host events woven into the rhythm of nature. These may include Bon rituals to honor ancestors, sumo performances by villagers on Respect for the Aged Day, or ceremonies to pray for fire protection and good harvests.

Many of these occasions are held privately within families or villages and are not open to the public. But if you happen upon them during your travels, we invite you to simply watch respectfully from a distance. Each village carries its own expressions, forming a tapestry of autumn traditions distinct from mainland Japan.

Seasonal Highlights

Tanabata in the Lunar Calendar

Toward the end of summer, you may notice Tanabata decorations adorning doorways and street corners. In 2025, the lunar Tanabata falls on August 29, a reminder that on Amami, seasonal customs are still celebrated in the rhythms of the old calendar.

Even after Tanabata has passed, you may still see bamboo decorations lingering—these hold another meaning: guiding ancestral spirits home during the Bon period, which in 2025 will be observed from September 4 to 6. At Miru Amami, Tanabata decorations will be set at the front desk, inviting guests to share their wishes and take part in this quiet tradition. And if skies are clear, don’t miss the Milky Way stretching above, with the half-moon drifting like a boat across the stars.

Festivals of the Autumn Equinox (Late September–Early October)

Ceremonies such as Arasetsu and Shibasaki, or Shochogama and Hirase Mankai, are Amami customs in which dances and songs give thanks for harvests and offer prayers for fire safety. They reflect the island’s deep gratitude to both nature and ancestors.

Why Visit Amami in Autumn?

After the lively summer season fades, autumn invites a quieter, more profound kind of journey. It is a time to share space with locals, to listen, and to encounter traditions that are lived rather than staged. Increasingly, travelers from both Japan and abroad come not just to observe, but to join these rituals as a way of connecting more deeply with the island.

For those who seek a trip shaped not only by sea and forest, but by the rhythms of community and culture, Amami in autumn offers an experience unlike any other. At Miru Amami, through events like Taneoroshi, we welcome you to take part in moments that go beyond sightseeing—moments that weave your story into the living fabric of the island.
