The snow may have bid their farewell, but there’s no shortage of fun activities in Niseko during the spring season! With the snow melting away and the temperature slowly warming up, Niseko transforms into a charming and picturesque destination, perfect for outdoor activities. Here are three exciting things to do while enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery:
In Japan, cherry blossoms bloom from South to North. And since Hokkaido is located in the northernmost prefecture, it is usually the last place for cherry blossoms to bloom every year. From late April to early May, the town explodes in shades of pink as the cherry trees bloom. There are many notable gardens throughout Niseko where you can stroll along the paths lined with these gorgeous flowers, and enjoy picnics with friends and family under the blossoming trees.
Makkari Shrine, a centuries-old Shinto shrine, creates a mystical atmosphere when the shrine’s cherry blossom trees burst into bloom. Not only is it one of the most famous shrines among Niseko locals, it has a beautiful path lined up with cherry blossom trees that you can follow to get to the main shrine.
Visitors can also stop by Soga Forest Park where you can enjoy beautiful views of Mt. Yotei with various sakura trees from the park’s lawn plaza.
Mishima San Garden is another stunning Japanese-style garden located near the base of Mount Yotei. During hanami season, visitors can stroll through the garden’s winding paths, taking in the delicate pink and white petals of Shibazakura (pink moss flower) blanketing the trees.
The beauty and tranquillity of these hanami spots are sure to be a highlight of your trip to Niseko!
As winter subsides in Niseko, Shiribetsu River becomes a hub for white-water rafting. The thrilling sport of navigating the river rapids is an excellent adventure sport to experience in Niseko. This exhilarating experience will take you through some of the most stunning landscapes in the world, from soaring peaks to lush forests, all while you navigate the rapids.
The best time to go white-water rafting in Shiribetsu River is from early April to October. During this period, the weather is warm, and the water flow is optimal for rafting. When you arrive at the river, you will be given safety instructions by your guide, who is a professional white-water rafter. They will guide you through the tricks and techniques that you will need to use to navigate the rapids. Depending on the course you take, the adventure time differs but the thrill you receive remains the same! The stunning landscape, the thrilling rapids, and the chance to see wildlife up close makes it an unforgettable experience.
One of the most interesting things to do in Niseko during the spring season is exploring the natural springs and drinking the fresh water straight from the source, however we’d recommend to drink it after boiled.
Located in the mountainous region of Hokkaido, Fukidashi Park is a natural gem hidden away in the town of Kyogoku. The highlight of Fukidashi Park is its natural spring water, which is used to create delicious cold coffee, jelly and alcohol. In addition to clear spring water, the park also boasts fresh local produce and goods such as potato croquettes and delicious soft-serve ice cream.
Another natural wonder of Niseko is Yoteizan no Wakimizu, a mountain spring that continuously flows year-round in Makkari Village. Here, visitors can look forward to the tofu shop that utilises the spring water to make their tofu. The spring water here is said to have a slightly softer and more mellow taste.
Easy to miss but another fascinating must-see spot is Niseko Sakamoto Park. Niseko Sakamoto Park is home to Kanro-sui, a spring which is rumoured to have been visited by the Showa Emperor. Locals use the water to make coffee and cook rice while cafes around the area use the spring water for baking.
In short, Niseko in spring is a nature lover’s paradise. From stunning cherry blossoms to thrilling rafting adventures and healing spring water, you’ll find plenty of reasons to fall in love with Niseko during the spring season. Come and immerse yourself in the beauty and excitement of the town during this wonderful season.
