Gojo‑zaka Pottery Festival

📍 When: August 7–10|Where: Gojo‑dori Street, near Wakamiya Hachimangu

Each summer, Gojo‑zaka transforms into a lively “Pottery Street”—a vibrant mix of hundreds of stalls offering everything from playful cups and colorful plates to refined ceramic art by established and emerging potters.

Many artisans are onsite and happy to share the stories behind their work.

The relaxed, open-air setting makes it easy for families to browse together.  While children enjoy picking out small, playful pieces, adults can take their time exploring more refined works—making it a relaxed and enriching experience for all ages.

Browsing here becomes more than shopping—it’s a moment of discovery and connection that lingers long after your trip.

Miru’s Tip:
Visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the heat is mild. It’s the perfect time to let kids explore small items at their pace, while adults enjoy a more leisurely browsing experience.

Hozugawa Fireworks Festival & Kameoka Peace Festival

📍 When: August 11th | Where: Kameoka City (≈30 minutes from Kyoto Station by train)

Tucked in the mountains west of Kyoto, Kameoka hosts an annual summer celebration featuring 13,000 fireworks lighting up the night sky.
The Hozu River, known for its scenic boat rides from Kameoka to Saga, Arashiyama area, becomes even more enchanting as the fireworks reflect on its calm surface— a quintessential summer view.

All seats are reserved, making it a comfortable and relaxing experience even for families with small children.  We recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy the event in a calm and easygoing setting.

Miru’s Tip:
Kameoka, the site of the fireworks festival, is also known for the scenic Hozugawa River boat ride. Since the ride flows one way from Kameoka to Arashiyama, visitors who wish to enjoy the fireworks after the river experience will need to return to Kameoka. That’s why we recommend spending the day enjoying nature in Arashiyama, followed by an evening of fireworks in Kameoka.

Gozan no Okuribi: Obon’s Gentle Glow

📍 When: August 16th| Where: The Five surrounding mountains in Kyoto

As summer comes to a close, flames begin to glow across the darkening hills of Kyoto.
This is Gozan no Okuribi, one of the city’s most iconic seasonal events.
Held every year on the evening of August 16th, it marks the end of Obon, a traditional Japanese period for honoring the spirits of one’s ancestors.

The first fire is lit at 8:00pm, when the character “Dai (大)” appears on Mt. Daimonji.
One by one, more fires take shape—some as kanji characters, others as symbols like a boat or a torii gate.
Each burns brightly for about 30 minutes before fading slowly into the night.

Originally a spiritual ritual to send off ancestral spirits, the event today offers a moment of quiet reflection for everyone.
Even if you don’t know the full story behind it, the sight of flames dancing on the mountains will stay with you.
It’s a chance to pause, feel the shift in the season, and share a gentle goodbye to summer.

Miru’s Tip:
For travelers, the Kamogawa River near Demachiyanagi offers one of the best views.
