They offer one to two flights daily from various cities across Japan, including Tokyo (approximately 2.5 hours), Osaka (around 2 hours), Fukuoka (about 1.5 hours), Kagoshima (approximately 1 hour), and Naha (around 1 hour).

Getting to Amami Oshima by Sea

Amami Oshima’s Naze Port serves as a point on the ferry itinerary linking Kagoshima and Naha on Okinawa Island. Two distinct ferry operators manage the service, A” LINE and MARIX LINE, with sailings occurring approximately every other day. The journey spans around eleven hours when departing from Kagoshima and about 13 hours when embarking from Naha.

Getting Around Amami Oshima on Land

Amami Oshima is a sizable island that takes around two hours to drive from top to bottom. The island’s largest town is Amami City, located on the northern coast near the island’s centre. This is where ferries from Kagoshima and Okinawa arrive.

The Shimabus (the “island bus”) is at your service for public transport and has about ten bus routes convened in central Amami City that branch out to various island corners. Buses maintain a 30-minute frequency between the airport and central Amami City and approximately every 90 minutes between Amami City and Setouchi, a town near the island’s southern tip. However, their presence is notably less frequent in other locales. The ‘Akaogi Post Office’ bus stop is the nearest stop to Miru Amami; however, please note that it takes over 40 minutes to walk from there to the hotel.

Tucked away in the northeastern corner of the island, you’ll find Amami Airport, a mere 45-minute drive or 60-minute bus journey from the heart of Amami City. Opting for a rental car offers the most convenient means of exploring the island, especially considering the limited availability of public transportation. Therefore, we highly recommend renting a car to easily navigate around Amami. You can easily secure rental cars from outlets at Amami Airport and within central Amami City. We’ve put together a list of our recommended rental car providers for you to book in advance.
