Another “Summer” in Amami
Another “Summer” in Amami
September 30, 2025

Guests arriving in Amami Ōshima in October are often surprised by its warmth.

With the bustle of high summer behind, the island exhales into a quieter rhythm.

The sun still shines generously, the sea remains calm, and the days feel like a continuation of summer itself—endless, unhurried, alive.

For travelers seeking more than a quick escape—for those who want to journey deeper—Miru Amami invites you to discover the island’s autumn, a season that feels like “another summer.”

Sunset Cruise

Set sail on the waters of Amami Ōshima, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and experience the magic of a sunset at sea.

As the sky and ocean shift through shades of gold and crimson, time slows, and everyday life feels far away. Watching the sun sink gently into the horizon is a sight so beautiful, it leaves you speechless. Share this fleeting moment with family, friends, or loved ones—it’s a memory that will stay with you long after the journey ends.

◇ Price: Adults (12+) JPY 9,000

◇ Capacity: Up to 4 guests (solo travelers welcome)

◇ Duration: About 1.5 hours (departure varies by sunset time)

Fee includes boat fare and insurance.

— About the Boat “Zan” —

“Zan” means dugong in the Amami dialect, named after the gentle sea creature once seen here decades ago. Just like the rare dugong, this 29ft Finsailer is one of only two in Japan. Sailing aboard Zan carries a wish for the sea of Amami to remain a place where such treasures can one day return.

Mangrove Canoe: Drifting into Autumn Silence

Mangrove canoeing is available year-round in Amami, but autumn brings its own quiet magic. The heavy humidity of summer eases, the skies turn clear, and the forest air feels fresh and light.

Each excursion shifts with the tide:

  • At high tide, glide through mangrove tunnels that can only be entered when the waters rise.
  • At low tide, spot tiny crabs and mudskippers at the roots of trees like mehirugi and ohirugi.
  • In autumn, even mokuzugani crabs stir actively, adding to the season’s richness.

Along the way, you may encounter mangrove clams and other small creatures that keep the mangrove ecosystem in balance, filtering water and nurturing life.

In the stillness, only birdsong and the gentle dip of paddles break the silence. It’s a rare chance to awaken all five senses, to feel the quiet pulse of nature, and to refresh the spirit in a landscape alive with hidden diversity.

Cultural Encounters: Stories Woven Through Time

Amami’s islands are alive with traditions that have been handed down for centuries, still shaping daily life today.

  • “Taneoroshi” Harvest Festival in Amami Ōshima
On Amami itself, each October (around the lunar 9th month), villages hold the “Taneoroshi,” a harvest festival to give thanks for the year’s bounty.
Under the night sky, shamisen and chijin drums echo while island songs and the spirited hachigatsu-odori dance carry on traditions from the Edo period.
To stand in the circle, to hear the voices in Shimaguchi (the island language), and to see culture alive in the hands of today’s islanders—this is an experience no hotel stay alone can offer.
