As the cicadas hum, the city enters its most vibrant season of the year: matsuri festival season. For those staying with us this July, you’re in for an unforgettable journey into the heart of Kyoto’s traditions.
When: Entire month of July
Main Events: Shijo, Karasuma, and Kawaramachi streets, Yasaka Shrine
Gion Matsuri is more than a festival, it’s a living tapestry of Kyoto’s past and present. Dating back to 869, this month-long celebration began as a prayer to end a deadly epidemic and has evolved into one of Japan’s three great festivals, along with Tokyo’s Kanda Matsuri and Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri.

Locals and travelers alike wear yukata summer kimono and wander the illuminated streets, sharing in this joyful celebration.
Mikoshi Togyo (Portable Shrine Processions)
July 17 & 24 (the ceremony starts at 4pm on the 17th, with the mikoshi leaving the shrine around 6pm)
On the evenings of the parades, three mikoshi (portable shrines) are carried by volunteers through the streets. These sacred vessels house the gods of Yasaka Shrine and are moved in an effort to bless the city with protection and vitality.
