Beach Days in Amami Oshima

On days without a guided tour, Amami’s beaches and coastal spots offer plenty of family time — though not every spot near the airport is suited to swimming, so it’s worth choosing with that in mind.

Ayamaru Cape Park is the best swimming option close to the airport — about 8–10 minutes away, and roughly 25 minutes from Miru Amami. Alongside sweeping ocean views from the cape, the park has a supervised seawater pool open in summer, a playground, a café, and easy parking, making it a genuinely relaxed choice for families with young children.

Ohama Seaside Park (Naze Area) is Amami’s iconic sunset spot, offering panoramic views of the sun setting over the East China Sea. One of the most distinctive family experiences on Amami Oshima happens after sunset. The Subtropical Forest Night Tour takes families by car through the forests of Sumiyo — one of the most biodiverse areas on the island — in search of species that only appear after dark.

The star of the tour is the Amami rabbit, a nocturnal creature found only on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima, designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan. With mongoose eradication on the island completed in September 2024, the population is recovering and sighting rates are higher than they have been in decades. Alongside the Amami rabbit, the tour passes through habitats where the Ryukyu Scops Owl, Amami Woodcock, and other endemic species are active after dark.
