It boasts around 40 cherry blossom trees during the spring, their beauty enhanced by evening illumination. Tea houses, frequented by geisha where they entertain with artistry, line the streets, their blossoms ablaze with light, creating a magical spectacle. Gion Shirakawa is aglow with pink petals and riverside lights as twilight descends, offering a genuinely enchanting cherry blossom viewing experience.

After admiring the beauty of Shirakawa’s cherry blossoms, enjoy a delicious meal at Kacto, a modern American cafe restaurant along the Kamogawa River. They offer contemporary American cuisine with a unique Japanese twist in a two-storey machiya house with indoor and outdoor seating (that is only available in Summer). Enjoy the view of Kamogawa River and the delicate passing of time as you sit and enjoy your meal, from brunch to dinner.

The Philosopher’s Path and The Diner café

The Philosopher’s Path is a charming walkway tracing a canal adorned with approximately 400 cherry blossom trees. This historic route, dating back to 1890 and associated with the Biwa Canal system, earned its moniker from the philosopher who frequented it. Generously donated by renowned artist Hashimoto Kansetsu and his wife, the cherry trees, including Yoshino and other varieties, add to the path’s allure, complemented by blooming camellias, forsythias, Thunberg spireas, and Japanese kerrias. Experience the serene beauty of Japanese spring along this picturesque trail, best enjoyed from late March to early April.

“The Diner,” is a charming café along Kyoto’s Philosopher’s Path, offering speciality cheesesteaks and other delicious dishes.. Enjoy spacious indoor seating and outdoor options while savouring their authentic cheesesteak sandwiches. Perfect for lunch and don’t miss out to explore Ginkakuji and other temples along the path. 

Kyoto Botanical Gardens and Mori no Cafe

The Kyoto Botanical Gardens showcases over 180 varieties of cherry blossoms, offering a month-long spectacle from early March to late April. Established in 1924, it’s Japan’s first public botanical garden, boasting over 12,000 plant species. With 500 cherry trees, including an elegantly large shidare-zakura (weeping cherry) tree, standing at approximately 14 metres in height, was cultivated from the seeds of the first-generation tree in Maruyama Park, located in Gion. During peak viewing season, visitors can enjoy a rich cultural experience and deepen their understanding of cherry blossom culture for a fee of 200 yen per adult, 150 yen per high school student, and with complimentary admission for children. 

For a convenient dining option on-site, head to Mori no Cafe near the central lawn by the rose garden. Guests can purchase meal tickets from a vending machine and enjoy diverse dishes indoors or outdoors amidst serene garden views.
