Music and The Stories Told from Amami’s Folklore

Learn more about Amami through the music of its people. Folk songs are typically performed using an Amami Shamisen, called “Sanshin”, a string instrument played with three strings and a pick made by bamboo or horn of a water buffalo. The music played from the instrument symbolizes the culture of its people through heart felt lyrics that narrates the joys of living out happy days.

These songs, performed by the youth play an important role to preserve our culture for future generations.

Did you know that people on Amami Oshima live to reach 100 years old?⁠

The secret to their longevity appears to be due to a low-stress lifestyle distinguished by harmonious coexistence with nature. This includes adequate sleep in accordance with the natural flow of life, physical activity in the presence of naturalistic elements, an appreciation for leisure pursuits such as island music and dances, and healthy interpersonal relationships. ⁠

Christmas in Amami: A special day for all of Japan

Did you know Amami Oshima was a Christmas gift to Japan back in 1953? After the World War II, Amami and the Okinawa islands were under the control of the United States which brought hardship on the island and its people. For 8 years, a petition was requested for the islands to be returned back to Japan and was finally granted on Christmas day in 1953. In accordance with this, Amamian’s celebrate this day as Memorial Day, in addition to Christmas.
