On Amami Oshima, the island air carries a hint of salt and sugar – specifically kokuto, or Okinawan brown sugar. It’s not just for sweets; here it becomes shochu. Kokuto shochu is a regional spirit, produced only in the Amami Islands under a postwar law that limits its distillation to this region. Its quiet presence remains largely untouched beyond the islands, quietly rooted in place.

Tomita Shuzojo, a small distillery located at the edge of Naze city, has been crafting this brown-sugar spirit since 1951. The building is modest, wedged between sea and mountain, but its roots run deep. Inside, clay pots buried in the earth bubble gently through the first stages of fermentation – a method unchanged since the founder’s day. They have been using the same pots for seventy years.

Unlike sake breweries with timber and tile, Amami’s shochu makers work in steel sheds built to weather typhoons. Steel is sterile. Clay, however, breathes – and therein lies the secret.

Tomita Shuzojo uses white rice grown in Kagoshima, and often opts for wild black koji instead of the more common white variety—adding nuance and natural complexity to the result.

Kokuto shochu remains Japan’s best-kept secret, largely because of the postwar law that restricts its production to Amami.

Ohama Seaside Park (Ohama Beach)

Amami City Ohama Seaside Park is an idyllic beach locale in the centre of Amami Oshima. It offers a spectacular view of a pristine white sand coastline and emerald green sea. Taen Beach in Uken Village

Taen is a stunning beach with clear emerald-green waters located in front of Edatekushima. Year-round, people can be seen fishing from the shallow breakwater. In winter, the beach is also popular for surfing.

Near the administration building, you’ll find barbecue and shower facilities. Despite its appeal, it remains a lesser-known gem where you can relax and soak in the ambience of Amami Island away from the crowds. Beach facilities and lifeguard services are available only from Marine Day in July until the end of September.

Honohoshi Coastline

Honohoshi Coastline offers a unique atmosphere on Amami Oshima. Along this coast, which gazes upon the Pacific Ocean, lie smooth, rounded cobblestones sculpted by strong waves. As these waves break upon the shore, the stones tumble and interact, producing the calming melodies of “kara kara” and “koro koro” that echo along the shore.

The relentless crashing waves and splashing water create a refreshing atmosphere. In the middle of this coastline lies a significant gap in the reef, occasionally adorned by a rainbow.

In Amami Oshima, stones are believed to harbour spirits, with those along the Honohoshi coast thought to possess exceptional powers. Legend says it’s prohibited to take these stones home, as they are said to bring bad luck. 

While not recommended for swimming, this shoreline entices visitors with its wild waves and stunning landscape. It is believed that listening to the enigmatic sounds of the rounded stones has a purifying and soothing effect on the heart.

From 25th March onwards, twelve cities and towns in the Kagoshima Prefecture are now part of the Tabisakinozei programme, a “destination tax payment” system, with Miru Amami and Amanari now officially registered as member merchants. Nestled within a tranquil natural garden, enveloped by lush subtropical foliage, visitors are invited to explore the intricate art of mud dyeing, an integral part of crafting Amami tsumugi, a luxuriously soft fabric fashioned from raw silk threads.

Oshima Tsumugi, a renowned traditional craft from Amami Oshima, stands among Japan’s finest textiles globally. Characterised by its rich black hue and intricate dyeing and weaving techniques, this fabric undergoes over 30 meticulous processes, resulting in a glossy, supple texture that’s both lightweight and wrinkle-resistant. Discover a piece of Oshima Tsumugi, the masterpiece of textiles, which takes six months to a year to make.

At Oshima Tsumugi Village, visitors can participate in the popular mud dyeing experience, stroll through lush gardens surrounded by subtropical flora, and witness the entire production process from silk thread to finished textile.

Akaogi, home to Oshima Tsumugi Village, is steeped in history as the birthplace of mud dyeing, and legends like the “Milky Way legend” add to its mystique. Visit Oshima Tsumugimura, surrounded by the beauty of nature that creates the uniqueness of this island’s craft and culture, which differs from that of mainland Japan.

Mud Dyeing Experience

Initially, guests convene with the craftsman to discuss the preferred pattern and colour intensity, followed by a briefing on the workflow. The experience commences serenely, accompanied by engaging conversations with the islander’s uncle. Then, the dyeing process begins, soaking the fabric in dye derived from the Sharinbai, Yeddo Hawthorn. Locally known as the “Teichi Tree,” harvested from the mountains and crafted into chips, left to settle for several days to achieve the desired hue. This dye is completed through this process.

After the fabric is dyed brown, it’s transferred to a mud field for further natural dyeing, where mud is carefully applied. Through a chemical reaction between the iron-rich soil of Amami and the tannins in the dye from Sharinbai, the fabric gradually adopts the traditional hue of Oshima Tsumugi, resembling the earth. This dyeing and mud application cycle creates a deeper black sheen, with the frequency of the process determining the intensity of the colour, be it brown or blackish.

Amami Oshima’s mud dyeing technique, rooted in nature’s blessings and ancestral wisdom, offers a unique opportunity to engage in a cultural heritage that spans over 1,300 years. The mud sourced from Amami Oshima boasts fine particles, enabling fabric dyeing without causing damage. Additionally, the natural ingredients in mud dyeing provide insect-repellent and deodorising properties, enhancing its appeal beyond its aesthetic significance.

After finishing the mud dyeing, the next step is to let it dry naturally. While waiting, guests can stroll through the garden, observing the intricate process of crafting Oshima Tsumugi. Upon entering the workshop, the live-action craftsmen greet you. They readily share insights into their craft, fostering engaging conversations and an immersive experience in the island’s rich cultural heritage.

When visiting on a pleasant day, guests can find their freshly dyed clothes dry under the sun, prompting them to take a leisurely stroll through the garden adorned with manicured pathways and lush subtropical foliage, all while clad in their freshly dyed attire. After exploring the well-tended grounds, visitors conclude their walk at a quaint shop offering an array of unique items. From bespoke pongee creations to charming souvenirs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy or take home as a memento of their visit.
